Electric Tank and Vessel Heat Tracing

Tank and Vessel Heating

Industrial tanks and vessels can lose significant heat depending on surface area, insulation and surrounding conditions. Electric heating systems compensate for these losses and keep products freeze-protected, pumpable or within the required process temperature range.

Freeze protection and critical connections

Local cold areas at nozzles, piping connections, valves or pumps can create operating problems even when the main vessel is protected. The tank and attached equipment should therefore be considered as one thermal system. Nozzles, manways and supports can lose heat differently from the vessel wall. Heater distribution and sensor location are therefore selected to represent the relevant operating condition and protect critical local areas.

Heat-up duties

Where tank contents must reach a target temperature within a specified period, the heat-up energy derived from mass, heat capacity and temperature rise is added to ongoing heat loss. An initial energy balance uses product mass and heat capacity, starting and target temperatures, and the available heat-up time. Heat loss from the vessel and connections continues during this period; permitted product temperatures and heat distribution also need review.

Heating technologies

Depending on vessel size, temperature and design, suitable solutions can include heating cables, resistance heaters, mineral insulated systems, tubular heating elements and engineered custom arrangements.

Tank or vessel insulation can be included through our partner companies. Heating surfaces, sensors, nozzles and maintenance access are coordinated with the insulation construction. Vessel drawings, temperature data and any existing insulation specification help define the requested scope.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For heating cables and assemblies outside hazardous areas, IEC/IEEE 62395-1:2024 is the international reference for general requirements and testing. Germany still lists DIN EN 62395-1:2014-10 as the current national edition. IEC/IEEE 62395-2:2024 addresses system design, installation, maintenance and repair outside hazardous areas. DIN EN 62395-2:2014-12 remains the current German national edition. Record the agreed edition in the project documentation.

Temperature control and monitoring

Sensors and appropriate controls allow repeatable, demand-based operation. Larger systems can include centralized monitoring for status, temperature and alarms.

The measured wall temperature is not necessarily the product temperature. Mixing, viscosity and potential temperature layers affect the location of control and monitoring sensors. Where required, product measurement, surface temperature and limiting functions are assessed separately. The control concept follows the fluid's permissible temperature window.

Fill level and heat distribution

A warm tank wall does not automatically mean a uniform product temperature. Fill level, agitation, viscosity and heat transfer influence how heat moves through the contents. Heated surfaces above the liquid level require particular attention on partly filled vessels. Heating area, surface loading and measurement points are therefore considered together. In addition to a tank drawing, an enquiry should include minimum and maximum fill levels and the operating sequence.
