Heat Trace Control Panels and Power Distribution

Heat Tracing Control Panels

For multi-circuit heat tracing systems, power distribution, protection, temperature control and monitoring are often combined in project-specific control panels. Pro Therm develops panel concepts around the heat tracing system and the electrical requirements of the plant.

Circuit protection

Circuit protection is selected for the heater technology, circuit and supply system. Overcurrent protection, residual-current protection and ground-fault monitoring serve different purposes and are chosen according to the actual requirements.

The response to a detected fault is defined as well: alarm, shutdown and conditions for restarting. Protection devices must be clearly assigned to their circuits for operation and fault finding.

Temperature control

Controls and sensors are planned for the thermal duty. Assigning a sensor to one or several heating circuits depends on actual temperature conditions and the intended control behaviour.

Critical processes may require additional limitation and alarm functions. Setpoints, limits and the response to sensor faults are agreed before implementation and recorded in the associated documentation.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For industrial platinum resistance sensors such as Pt100 or Pt1000, IEC 60751:2022 defines the resistance relationship and sensor requirements; the German adoption is DIN EN IEC 60751:2023-06. Wiring arrangement, accuracy and installation are selected for the measurement duty.

Monitoring and interfaces

Equipment selection starts by defining which information is needed locally and in the plant-control system. Depending on the configuration, temperatures, heating permissions, operating status, current readings and faults can be made available.

The interface is agreed with the operator or plant engineer. This includes signal type, circuit identification and behaviour if communication is lost. The confirmed functional scope is defined for the project.

Alongside the control panel, we offer cabling between our control panels and the power-feed and control boxes where cable routes are already available. Cables, connection points and circuit assignments are coordinated with the design and drawings. For an enquiry, identify the existing routes and the requested connection boundaries.

Environmental conditions

Location, ambient temperature, dust, humidity, condensation and solar exposure influence the enclosure and installed equipment. If a hazardous-area location is proposed, requirements for the actual configuration are assessed separately.

Enclosure size and ingress protection are coordinated with access, cable entries and maintenance space. Clear circuit labels and traceable assignments between controllers, sensors and power outputs support subsequent work on the system.

Heat is also generated inside the panel

Switching devices, power supplies and power controllers release heat inside the panel. Thermal assessment considers their losses, simultaneous operation, spacing and installation conditions. A high ingress-protection rating alone does not define a permissible internal temperature.

The enclosure and components are selected together. Outdoor locations add solar exposure and possible condensation; project restrictions on ventilation or cooling should be included in the enquiry.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): Temperature-rise verification is part of assessment under IEC 61439-1:2020 and IEC 61439-2:2020. IEC TR 60890:2022, adopted in Germany as DIN EN IEC 61439-1 Beiblatt 2:2025-02, provides a supplementary calculation method. Its suitability for the actual assembly is assessed separately.
