Electric Heat Tracing for Power Plants and Energy Facilities
Power Generation and Energy Plants
Power plants and energy facilities contain many freeze- and temperature-sensitive utility and process systems. Electric heat tracing protects piping and equipment, supports process conditions and helps maintain availability of critical plant components.

Process temperature maintenance
Chemicals, oils, additives and other products may require defined maintain temperatures. Heat tracing is designed around heat loss, operating modes and plant availability requirements.
High-temperature duties
Hot process piping or elevated exposure temperatures may require resistance or mineral insulated heating systems.
Control and power distribution
Large facilities can contain many heat tracing circuits. Controllers, control panels, protection and plant communication are therefore treated as part of the overall system.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For low-voltage power switchgear and controlgear assemblies, IEC 61439-1:2020 is used together with IEC 61439-2:2020. Part 1 includes COR1:2021 and COR2:2023. The German editions are DIN EN IEC 61439-1:2021-10 and DIN EN IEC 61439-2:2021-10, including applicable corrigenda.
Maintainability and documentation
Clear circuit identification, test records and current documentation make maintenance and troubleshooting easier over the equipment lifecycle. Repeat testing benefits from clear assignments of circuits, protective devices, sensors and setpoints. Documentation should also track changes in operation and insulation.
Large numbers of circuits need clear identification, alarms and maintenance organisation. Measurement points and controller channels are linked to their pipe sections. Current records, periodic checks and traceable setpoints support outages and modifications. Insulation condition and accessible special locations are also assessed.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For operation and periodic verification in Germany, the references are DIN VDE 0105-100:2015-10 with A1:2017-06 and the corrigendum to A1 issued in 2020-10.
Availability during shutdown
Auxiliary systems may need to remain available while the main plant is shut down. Freeze protection must therefore not be lost unintentionally when a process area is switched off.
Power supply, operating enable and alarm routing are particularly important for these circuits. Before restart, heating function, setpoints and insulation condition are checked.
