Heat Tracing Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Repair
Maintenance and Repair
Heat tracing failures can cause frozen piping, process deviations or production interruptions. Systematic inspection and maintenance help identify problems early and target repairs where they are actually needed.

An assessment starts with the circuit schedule, wiring diagrams and previous test records where available. Depending on the system, the inspection covers power supplies, connection and end terminations, visible cable damage, temperature sensors, controllers and protective devices. Electrical readings and functional checks are assigned to individual circuits. This helps distinguish a heating cable fault from a control or power supply problem.

Whether a repair is possible depends on cable technology, damage location, system age and approvals. A connection kit, sensor or controller may be replaced selectively; cable damage may require an approved section repair or a new circuit. In hazardous areas, component compatibility and restoration of the specified installation are particularly important. We assess the scope and spare-part availability against the existing system information.

Maintenance in hazardous areas requires particular care to preserve the specified equipment configuration, approved components and documentation.
Repairs follow the cable system, accessibility and the manufacturer's permitted methods. In hazardous areas, maintaining the protection concept is part of the assessment. After changes, circuit identification, technical records and agreed test values are updated to connect the new condition with the existing plant.

A failed circuit on a short dead leg may be more critical than a fault on a long line that is currently unused. Maintenance planning therefore links the finding to the heating duty, affected process and accessibility. The operator’s availability requirements determine priority.
Immediate technical clarification, work during the next shutdown and recorded observation points are distinguished. This supports the operator’s decision and helps prepare parts, installation and insulation work. New baseline values are assigned to the affected circuit after the agreed work.

How often should heat tracing be maintained?
Intervals depend on process criticality, environment, manufacturer and operator requirements and the site maintenance strategy. They should be defined for the actual system.
Can a damaged heating cable be repaired?
It depends on heater type, damage and approvals. Some components or sections can be repaired; other cases require circuit replacement.
Can Pro Therm inspect heat tracing from other manufacturers?
Existing systems can generally be assessed, but scope and spare-part availability depend on manufacturer, documentation and equipment condition.
Can the fault lie outside the heating cable?
Yes. Supply, enable signals, sensors, controls and insulation can cause similar symptoms. The cause is therefore identified before replacing a cable.

If a pipe is too cold, the heating cable is not necessarily defective. A misplaced sensor, interrupted supply, incorrect controller setting or damaged thermal insulation may cause the same symptom. Troubleshooting therefore starts with operating conditions and symptoms, then narrows the fault through circuit measurements and component checks. The result identifies the affected circuit and an appropriate corrective action.
Electrical function and thermal performance are assessed separately during fault diagnosis. A circuit drawing current may still deliver insufficient heat to the fluid because of wet insulation or unsuitable sensor placement. A missing enable signal does not necessarily mean the cable is defective. Findings are combined before a replacement decision.

Modernization

A maintenance record should distinguish the diagnosed fault from the repair performed. It records the circuit, operating conditions, measurements, affected components and remaining observations. Changes establish a traceable new baseline. At the next visit, this makes it possible to distinguish a known deviation from a new one. Missing documentation is recorded as an open issue rather than replaced with assumed design values.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): Equipment repair is distinct from installation inspection. Within their respective scopes, IEC 60079-19:2025 and the current German DIN EN IEC 60079-19:2021-07 address repair of Ex equipment. Permitted procedures, competence and manufacturer documentation are assessed for the actual device.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC 60079-17:2023, adopted in Germany as DIN EN IEC 60079-17:2024-10, addresses inspection and maintenance of electrical Ex installations. IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 adds guidance specific to trace heating systems.
