Self-Regulating Heating Cable for Industrial Heat Tracing
Self-Regulating Heating Cables
Self-regulating heating cables adjust their local heat output in response to temperature. They are suitable for many industrial freeze-protection and temperature-maintenance applications and can respond to different local conditions along a circuit.

A temperature-responsive heating element between the conductors changes electrical resistance. At lower temperatures heat output increases; at higher temperatures it decreases. This characteristic does not remove the need for project-specific design, maximum-temperature checks or appropriate controls.

Important criteria include required output at design temperature, maintain and exposure temperatures, supply voltage, maximum circuit length, starting current, jacket material, chemical environment and hazardous-area requirements.
The stated output applies to defined test conditions. For a warm process pipe, the output curve at the actual maintenance temperature matters. Maximum operating and exposure temperatures are assessed separately. A freeze protection cable is therefore not automatically suitable for hot cleaning or a much higher process temperature.

Nominal outputs of two self-regulating cables are comparable only when reference temperature, supply and test conditions match. A cable with a higher nominal rating may deliver a different output at the required process temperature. Selection therefore compares the performance curve against the calculated heat loss.
Product-specific service and ageing conditions and the intended control concept also matter. Self-regulation means local output adjustment. A defined temperature setpoint, alarm function and project-specific overtemperature protection are separate tasks.

Can self-regulating heat trace overheat?
Its temperature-responsive characteristic reduces local heat output, but project-specific checks of exposure temperature, hazardous-area requirements and controls are still necessary.
Can self-regulating cable be cut to length?
Many systems can be cut to length within their product rules, but maximum circuit lengths and termination requirements for the specific cable must be followed.
Does self-regulating heat trace need a thermostat?
It depends on the application, energy-efficiency target, process requirements and product specification. Temperature control is often beneficial and can be required.
How should I compare two nominal outputs?
Use the same reference conditions. The relevant curve is the output at the required maintain temperature and supply, alongside cold start, maximum circuit length and product service limits.

Electrical design takes the lowest start-up temperature into account. A cold self-regulating cable may initially draw more current than it does during normal operation. Maximum circuit length is therefore taken from product-specific tables for supply voltage, start-up temperature and the protective device. All connected branches contribute to the total. A nominal rating such as 10, 20 or 30 W/m alone is insufficient to determine circuit protection or maximum length.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For heating cables and assemblies outside hazardous areas, IEC/IEEE 62395-1:2024 is the international reference for general requirements and testing. Germany still lists DIN EN 62395-1:2014-10 as the current national edition.
Hazardous areas
Suitable cable variants and approved system components must be selected for hazardous locations. Certificates and permitted operating conditions must be checked for the actual product.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 and IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 are international references for resistance trace heating in hazardous areas. Germany still lists DIN EN 60079-30-1:2018-04 and DIN EN 60079-30-2:2018-04 as current national editions. Equipment group, permitted EPL, protection concept and evidence for the actual assembly determine suitability.
