Industrial Pipe Heat Tracing
Pipe Heat Tracing
Electric pipe heat tracing keeps liquids and gases within the temperature range required for reliable industrial operation. Pro Therm engineers, supplies and installs pipe heat tracing systems for industrial plants worldwide.

Water and other freeze-sensitive fluids can freeze when ambient temperatures fall. Heat tracing replaces heat lost through thermal insulation and keeps piping above the required minimum temperature. Design inputs include pipe size, the fluid and its required minimum temperature, the lowest ambient temperature, and the type and thickness of thermal insulation. Outdoor exposure, wind and operating conditions can also affect the required heating output.

Valves, flanges, pumps, pipe supports, instruments and other components create additional heat losses. They must be included in both engineering and installation so the system works beyond straight pipe runs. A straight-pipe installation detail cannot simply be repeated at every fitting. Additional heater length, suitable fixing and access for later removal or maintenance are considered for the specific piping arrangement.

The sensor should represent the pipe section being controlled. Sunlight, nearby heat sources or direct contact with the heating cable can distort readings. Where sections have different thermal conditions, we assess separate circuits or additional measurement points rather than controlling the entire route from an unsuitable location.

Heating selected for steel piping cannot automatically be transferred to plastic pipes. Permitted pipe-wall temperature, heat conduction through the pipe material and local heat output can limit the selection. No-flow conditions and possible external heating also need consideration.
Whether approved metallic heat-spreading tape or another measure is required depends on the piping system and the selected heater instructions. State the pipe material and temperature limits explicitly: nominal diameter alone does not define this application.

When does a pipe need heat tracing?
When freezing must be prevented, a process temperature maintained or a product heated to a defined operating condition.
Which heating cable is best for a pipe?
There is no universal answer. Selection depends on heat loss, temperatures, circuit length, environment, hazardous-area requirements and other project data.
Does Pro Therm install pipe heat tracing worldwide?
Yes. Industrial pipe heat tracing is one of the applications Pro Therm installs internationally with its own teams.
Why is pipe length alone insufficient?
Fittings, supports, insulation and operating conditions change the heat demand. Cable length, pipe length and required heat output therefore need separate assessment.

Many industrial applications require a defined minimum temperature rather than simple freeze protection. Oils, chemicals, fats, resins and other products may become viscous, crystallize or solidify as they cool. Correctly designed heat tracing preserves pumpability and process conditions.
Short branches can be as critical to the process as the main pipe. Drains, bypasses, instrument connections and dead legs are therefore assessed separately. Where fluids change or shutdowns are prolonged, the design must identify the minimum temperature required in each operating condition.

Valves, filters and pumps may need removal while adjacent piping remains in place. Heater routing therefore accounts for removable equipment, designed cable allowances and accessible connections. Spare cable is planned rather than left arbitrarily beneath the insulation. When a pipe section changes, the heat requirement, circuit length and sensor assignment are reviewed against the design. Isometrics provide a clear way to record these installation and maintenance details.
We can offer suitable thermal insulation together with partner companies. Heater routing, inspection points and insulation closure are coordinated. Tell us whether the quotation should cover heat tracing alone or include insulation as well.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): ISO 12241:2022, adopted in Germany as DIN EN ISO 12241:2022-09, provides thermal-insulation calculation rules primarily for steady-state conditions. Heat-up assessment additionally considers stored energy and heat transfer over time.

Self-regulating, resistance and mineral insulated heating cables can all be suitable. Selection depends on temperature, required output, circuit length, chemical environment, hazardous-area requirements and available electrical supply.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For heating cables and assemblies outside hazardous areas, IEC/IEEE 62395-1:2024 is the international reference for general requirements and testing. Germany still lists DIN EN 62395-1:2014-10 as the current national edition. IEC/IEEE 62395-2:2024 addresses system design, installation, maintenance and repair outside hazardous areas. DIN EN 62395-2:2014-12 remains the current German national edition. Record the agreed edition in the project documentation.
