Resistance Heating Cables for Industrial Heat Tracing
Resistance Heating Cables
Resistance heating cables generate heat through the electrical resistance of the heating conductor. Depending on construction, they can be used for engineered circuits, longer runs, higher temperatures or applications requiring a defined electrical output.

For series resistance heaters, conductor resistance, length and voltage determine circuit power. Parallel systems use a different electrical construction and, depending on product design, can provide a defined wattage per unit length. Selection must match the application.
In series cables, resistance, length and voltage together determine output. Parallel systems use a different electrical principle and have their own cutting rules. These differences matter for selection and replacement: similar diameter or output per metre does not make two cables interchangeable.

Series systems require required power, circuit length, supply voltage, permissible sheath temperature and electrical resistance to be engineered together. Changing length later can significantly change circuit output.
For a specified length, we assess the output at the intended supply and whether sheath temperature suits the application. Changes to an assembled length or supply voltage require reassessment. Connections and cold leads must match electrical loading, ambient conditions and installation location.

For a simple series heater with defined resistance R and applied voltage U, the approximate relationship is P = U²/R. Length and resistance per metre determine total resistance. Changing length therefore changes total output and output per metre; the original W/m figure cannot simply be retained.
Parallel constant-wattage systems have a different electrical construction and may have defined cutting zones. Calculation, fabrication and testing follow the actual cable type. The full type designation and original design are therefore more useful than the broad term resistance heating cable.

How is resistance heat tracing different from self-regulating cable?
Resistance systems have a different power characteristic and are often more dependent on electrical circuit design and geometry; self-regulating cables change local output with temperature.
Can series resistance cable be cut shorter on site?
Normally not without recalculation because circuit length changes electrical resistance and therefore heater power.
When is resistance heating useful?
It can be suitable for higher temperatures, long circuits, defined power duties or custom geometries, depending on the specific heater design.
Are series and parallel cables handled in the same way?
No. Construction, output calculation, permissible lengths and cutting rules differ. Follow the documentation for the specific product.

In a series resistance circuit, length, resistance, voltage and power are directly linked. Shortening the heating conductor without recalculation can change the power to an unacceptable level. Parallel systems use a different arrangement and may have defined cutting zones. The cable construction and design data are therefore established before fabrication. Any site adjustment starts with an engineering review, rather than cutting away what appears to be excess cable.
