Key inputs include pipe or vessel dimensions, product, maintain temperature, minimum ambient temperature, insulation type and thickness, material, supply voltage, hazardous-area classification and project-specific requirements. Heat-up duties additionally require mass, heat capacity and target heat-up time.

Missing input data is identified as an open issue. Assumptions about insulation, minimum ambient temperature or supply voltage directly affect the result and must be confirmed before execution. For existing plants, checking drawings against the actual pipe routing can be as important as the heat loss calculation.

Deliverables can include heat tracing schedules, technical calculations, connection information, drawings, material summaries, test requirements and project documentation so engineering, installation and future maintenance share the same information base. Clear circuit identifiers, setpoints, sensor positions and electrical circuit assignments also support future testing. Installation changes should be carried into the final as-built documentation.

A circuit schedule should show which pipe section belongs to each power feed, sensor and control channel. Changes in pipe length, insulation thickness or temperature target are linked to the affected circuit. This keeps the design basis traceable and retains the information needed for future replacement components.

If thermal insulation is to be included, we coordinate its scope with our partner companies. Planning for cabling between our control panels and the power-feed and control boxes includes existing cable routes and connection locations. We can undertake that cabling where cable routes are already available, with the scope clearly described in the quotation.

What information is needed for heat tracing design?

Typically geometry, process medium, maintain temperature, minimum ambient temperature, insulation and electrical conditions; hazardous-area and heat-up applications require additional data.

Is heat tracing power based only on pipe length?

No. Pipe length alone is insufficient. Diameter, temperatures, insulation, material, environment and other thermal factors determine required output.

Can Pro Therm design for practical field installation?

Yes. Pro Therm deliberately connects engineering with experience from its own installation teams to create field-ready systems.

Can existing heating equipment be reused?

This depends on its condition, electrical data, temperature limits and the revised heating task. A new setpoint or different pipe route can require a new design.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): ISO 12241:2022, adopted in Germany as DIN EN ISO 12241:2022-09, provides thermal-insulation calculation rules primarily for steady-state conditions. Heat-up assessment additionally considers stored energy and heat transfer over time.

Circuit and electrical design

Depending on scope, engineering includes circuit grouping, heater lengths, electrical loads, protection devices, sensing, control and connection concepts. Starting currents, maximum circuit lengths and practical installation requirements must be considered together.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC/IEEE 62395-2:2024 addresses system design, installation, maintenance and repair outside hazardous areas. DIN EN 62395-2:2014-12 remains the current German national edition. Record the agreed edition in the project documentation.

Hazardous-area engineering

Area classification, temperature class, maximum surface temperatures and suitable system components must align. Project standards and customer specifications are integrated into equipment selection and design.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC 60079-14:2024 addresses design, selection, installation and initial inspection of electrical Ex installations. Its German adoption is DIN EN IEC 60079-14:2026-02. It supplements general electrical-installation requirements. IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 and IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 are international references for resistance trace heating in hazardous areas. Germany still lists DIN EN 60079-30-1:2018-04 and DIN EN 60079-30-2:2018-04 as current national editions. Equipment group, permitted EPL, protection concept and evidence for the actual assembly determine suitability.
