Electric Heat Tracing for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants
Chemical Industry Heat Tracing
Chemical and petrochemical processes place demanding requirements on temperature maintenance, plant availability and explosion protection. Pro Therm engineers and installs electric heat tracing for piping, tanks, valves and process equipment worldwide.

Chemical products may change viscosity, crystallize or react as temperature changes. Heat tracing compensates for thermal losses and supports stable defined process conditions. Design inputs include product data, maintain temperature, permissible maximum temperature and operating modes. Crystallizing media may also require attention during start-up and shutdown.

Design must address more than straight pipe. Tanks, nozzles, valves, pumps, filters, instruments and other heat sinks can significantly affect thermal performance. Valves and flanges often need separate attention to avoid local cold spots. Connection and sensor positions are coordinated with piping and insulation work.

Normal ambient conditions do not describe every exposure. Chemical splashes, leakage and cleaning agents may impose different requirements on jackets, enclosures and fixings from routine operation. State the substances and exposure conditions that can actually occur.
Moisture beneath insulation also affects heat loss and the condition of the heated equipment. Heat-tracing inspection is therefore coordinated with insulation and plant-inspection responsibilities. An electrical test alone does not establish chemical compatibility or the condition of the pipe wall.

What does heat tracing do in chemical plants?
Typical duties include freeze protection, process temperature maintenance, viscosity control and high-temperature applications.
Are hazardous-area requirements the same for every chemical project?
No. Area classification, gas or dust group, temperature class, customer specification and selected components are project-specific.
Does Pro Therm install heat tracing in chemical plants worldwide?
Yes. Pro Therm installs electric heat tracing with its own teams at international plant locations. Deployment, scope and site prerequisites are agreed for the project.
Which operating conditions are particularly important?
Normal operation, shutdown, empty equipment, cleaning and external heating can impose different temperature and material requirements. Include these phases in the design inputs.

Material compatibility is assessed against actual exposure: process fluid, cleaning agents and ambient conditions may impose different requirements. Minimum and maximum temperatures and external heating also matter. A general chemical-resistance statement cannot replace product documentation or assessment of the installation.

Hazardous areas
Many chemical plants include hazardous locations. Heater systems, connection technology, controls and temperature limitation therefore need to match the area classification and project specification.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 and IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 are international references for resistance trace heating in hazardous areas. Germany still lists DIN EN 60079-30-1:2018-04 and DIN EN 60079-30-2:2018-04 as current national editions. Equipment group, permitted EPL, protection concept and evidence for the actual assembly determine suitability.
Piping, tanks and valves
Design must address more than straight pipe. Tanks, nozzles, valves, pumps, filters, instruments and other heat sinks can significantly affect thermal performance. Valves and flanges often need separate attention to avoid local cold spots. Connection and sensor positions are coordinated with piping and insulation work.
High temperatures and aggressive environments
Resistance or mineral insulated systems may be required for high process or exposure temperatures. Sheath materials and components are selected around temperature, chemical exposure and environment.

Minimum and maximum temperatures and external heating also matter. A general chemical-resistance statement cannot replace product documentation or assessment of the installation.
Documentation and testing
Industrial projects require traceable circuit schedules, technical documentation, testing and records. Deliverables are aligned with the project requirements.
Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC 60079-17:2023, adopted in Germany as DIN EN IEC 60079-17:2024-10, addresses inspection and maintenance of electrical Ex installations. IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 adds guidance specific to trace heating systems. IEC 60364-6:2016, including its 2017 corrigendum, provides the international installation-verification reference. For initial verification in Germany, DIN VDE 0100-600:2017-06 applies. Product testing, installation verification and thermal operating evidence are documented separately.
Allow for product changes
A different medium may require different minimum and maximum temperatures. Setpoints, permissible surface temperature and material compatibility should therefore be reviewed before a change.
Start-up, cleaning and shutdown belong in the operating description, so the conditions covered by the design remain clear.
