Electric Heat Tracing for Hydrogen and Power-to-X Facilities

Hydrogen and Power-to-X

Hydrogen and Power-to-X facilities combine new process chains with familiar industrial requirements for freeze protection, temperature maintenance, hazardous-area design and plant availability. Pro Therm provides project-specific electric heat tracing and international installation capability.

Not every heat tracing duty is directly on the hydrogen stream. Water, condensate, chemical, instrument and other utility systems can require freeze protection or temperature maintenance.

Heating demand follows the function of each auxiliary or process system. Water and condensate lines may need freeze protection, while other fluids need a defined temperature window. A hydrogen plant therefore does not automatically use one universal cable technology. Area classification and technical requirements are assessed for each location.

An early heat tracing schedule links piping data, insulation, electrical supply, controls and access. It helps define interfaces with other disciplines and the required tests.

At changing plant loads, auxiliary lines may remain without flow for extended periods. Heating demand therefore does not follow only the operating status of an electrolyser or other main unit. Shutdown, standby and restart conditions are described for each affected system.

Interlocks between skid and overall plant need to represent those conditions clearly. Stopping a production stage must not unintentionally remove required freeze protection. Equipment and evidence for the actual installation location are checked against area classification and the project specification.

Where is heat tracing used in hydrogen plants?

Depending on the plant, on process and utility piping, instrumentation, water and condensate systems and other freeze- or temperature-sensitive components.

Does every hydrogen line require heat tracing?

No. The requirement depends on process conditions, fluid, environment, material and required temperature.

Are ATEX or IECEx always required?

Requirements depend on location, area classification, project standard and actual application; they cannot be assumed universally.

Which skid interfaces matter?

Supply, circuit boundaries, sensor assignments, enable signals, alarms and connection and testing responsibilities should be clearly agreed between module and plant suppliers.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1:2025 and IEC/IEEE 60079-30-2:2025 are international references for resistance trace heating in hazardous areas. Germany still lists DIN EN 60079-30-1:2018-04 and DIN EN 60079-30-2:2018-04 as current national editions. Equipment group, permitted EPL, protection concept and evidence for the actual assembly determine suitability. IEC 60079-14:2024 addresses design, selection, installation and initial inspection of electrical Ex installations. Its German adoption is DIN EN IEC 60079-14:2026-02. It supplements general electrical-installation requirements.

Standards reference (checked 14 October 2026): For industrial platinum resistance sensors such as Pt100 or Pt1000, IEC 60751:2022 defines the resistance relationship and sensor requirements; the German adoption is DIN EN IEC 60751:2023-06. Wiring arrangement, accuracy and installation are selected for the measurement duty.
